Introduction

Since Nov 15, 2021, the long-awaited Public Observation Test Phase for Galileo OSNMA (Open Service Navigation Message Authentication) is finally live!
Interested users can sign up for this test phase on the GSC’s website and get access to all corresponding documents and information, including the current ICD, the receiver guideline, as well as the OSNMA public key and Merkle Tree Root which are needed for the authentication process.

OSNMA on GOOSE^©

In late 2020 and the first half of 2021, TeleOrbit GmbH and Fraunhofer IIS worked on a project to implement the Galileo OSNMA capabilities onto their Powerful and Compact GNSS Receiver Lab “GOOSE”.
This project successfully authenticated simulated OSNMA signals and was completed in May 2021.

Now, the team at Fraunhofer IIS adapted their setup to the newly published ICD and receiver guideline and was able to authenticate the live signal on Tuesday, November 16, 2021, see LinkedIn screenshot below (cropped).

This year, SG[Germany] will hold a one-day event in Munich on Saturday, March 14th 2020, dedicated to advancing the role of Germany and German industry in the space economy within the next decade.
The event intends to attract students and young professionals across Germany as participants.
The program will consist of keynote speeches and panels, followed by a round of discussions where participants are split into groups and work together on proposed topics.
Therefore, the audience will have a proactive role in the event!

The African Space Generation Workshop (AF-SGW) is a two-day regional workshop, which brings together students and young professionals with agency and industry representatives from across the African continent. It provides an unparalleled opportunity for the future leaders of Africa’s space endeavours to proactively establish strong relationships, exchange ideas and knowledge, and to collaborate on brainstorming new ideas and solutions using space technology for the benefit of Africa. In doing so, these young, passionate minds can help to shape the future of the African space industry.

The event date for the AF-SGW 2019 is 30 Nov 2019 (Saturday) and 1 Dec 2019 (Sunday), the two days immediately preceding the African Space Leadership Congress 2019, also to be held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, from 2 – 4 Dec 2019.

The theme for this year’s AF-SGW is
“Africa Rising: Space Technology and Innovation for a Sustainable Future”

Students and young professionals between the ages of 18 to 35 years old who are resident or whose country of citizenship is in Africa and are passionate about the space industry are invited to be part of the delegation. Past delegates have attended from all around Africa and from a wide variety of disciplines (engineering, business, science, arts, medicine and law).

By attending the African Space Generation Workshop, the delegates will have the opportunity to learn, share knowledge and network with fellow students and young professionals in the industry, and meet the industry’s leaders and experts. All discussions from the working groups are expected to produce recommendations to relevant public, private and non-governmental sectors, helping to shape the future of the African space industry. Reports and recommendations from the workshop will be presented at high-level conferences and included in the SGAC annual report submitted to the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (UN COPUOS).

From October 1 until October 5, our company, represented by Jürgen and Daniel Seybold, attended the International Astronautical Congress IAC in Bremen.
We were part of a Bavarian “delegation” lead by bavAIRia e.V. our Bavarian aerospace cluster and shared a big booth with other members of bavAIRia.
We presented our GNSS high-tech products, which we are selling on behalf of our partners Fraunhofer IIS and TeleConsult Austria.
We could even display one of the recent additions to our portfolio, our multi-GNSS receiver with an open software interface named GOOSE©.

The IAC is a big conference with an exhibition and focuses on all things space, covering topics as diverse as space law, “colonizing” Moon and Mars, propulsion, and even space history and psychology.
Over the five days delegates could listen to almost 2200 presentations in 180 sessions.
This was a new record number.

The number of delegates also reached new records seeing around 6500 people attending the IAC 2018 in Bremen.
And to top all those numbers, there is one additional number that is both mind-blowing and super exciting!
On Wednesday, October 3, national holiday in Germany, IAC opened its doors to the public, giving space enthusiasts the chance to wander around the exhibition hall and to experience this atmosphere themselves. During the public day we saw a live-call to the Space Station with German ESA astronaut Alexander Gerst as well as a second live-call in which he got handed the “key” to the ISS and became the first German ISS commander!
These live-calls as well as additional panels featuring astronauts and space agency heads happened in the nearby ÖVB Arena. The arena was buzzing and almost no seats were left empty.
The organisers announced that, in addition to the 6500 delegates, around 13000 visitors came for public day. Another record!
For us, this day was super hectic as you can imagine, but we are also very impressed with how well the day was organised.

In terms of business, we had many meetings, discussions at our booth and interesting interactions at other booths and during the evening and side events. Since it was our first IAC, we didn’t really know what to expect and can report that we are super happy with the outcomes of the congress.
Our GNSS business is a very niche market within the space industry but we met many professionals who are active in other space segments and who have specific needs we can meet.
The future will tell, if the IAC was a (business) success.

For now, we want to thank the organising “Team Germany” for all their hard work over the last two years which made the congress so successful and enjoyable! We would also like to thank bavAIRia e.V., namely Bärbel Deisting, Sabine Kling and Anne Schnitter, for their support before and during IAC!
And finally, a big thank you to all the friends, current and future business partners! It wouldn’t have been the same without you ?

Just before IAC, I (Daniel) attended the Space Generation Congress SGC organised by SGAC, the Space Generation Advisory Council.

The Space Generation Advisory Council in Support of the United Nations Programme on Space Applications is a global non-governmental, non-profit (US 501(c)3) organisation and network which aims to represent university students and young space professionals ages 18-35 to the United Nations, space agencies, industry, and academia. Headquartered in Vienna, Austria, the SGAC network of members, volunteers and alumni has grown to more than 13 000 members representing more than 150 countries.

SGAC was conceived at UNISPACE III in 1999, whereby states resolved, as part of the Vienna Declaration, “To create a council to support the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space, through raising awareness and exchange of fresh ideas by youth. The vision is to employ the creativity and vigour of youth in advancing humanity through the peaceful uses space”. SGAC holds Permanent Observer status at the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (UN COPUOS) and regularly takes part in the annual meeting, as well as its Legal and Scientific and Technical Subcommittees. SGAC holds consultative status at the United Nations Economic and Social Council (UN ECOSOC), contributing to discussions on the role of space in achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals. SGC is the biggest event organised by SGAC and is linked with the IAC. It always takes place in the same city as the IAC and happens just before IAC. This year, it took place from September 27 until September 29. It is organised in a similar manner as many other SGAC events, consisting of plenary sessions with invited high-level speakers and working groups addressing different topics.

For this SGC in Bremen, topics ranged from insights into the recent activities at Blue Origin, updates on the development of the ORION module or the Lunar Gateway, and many more.
The working groups (seven in total) focused on topics as diverse as space exploration and commercialization to space policy and space society.
The SGC was “accompanied” by evening events as well. Traditionally, these are the international cultural night, the space night and the gala dinner.
During the international cultural night, delegates from each country present their home country by performing a dance, singing a “traditional” song or doing a quiz. And everyone is encouraged to bring some local delicacies to the event as well.
This is one of the best and most fun (side) events you can think of!
The gala dinner marks the formal ending of SGC. This year we were hosted by the president of the senate of the free hanseatic city of Bremen, mayor Dr. Carsten Sieling. For the dinner we were invited to the city hall Bremen, a truly stunning venue with lots of history!
The gala dinner itself saw guest from all kinds of backgrounds, most SGC delegates, business leaders, space agency heads like Jan Wörner, Pascale Ehrenfreund, or Jean-Yves Le Gall, as well as “celebrities” like Bill “The Science Guy” Nye.

I have to thank the organising team for all their work! Remember, SGAC involvement is voluntary and everyone invested a lot of free time to pull this off!

Overall, both events were simply great, offering me personally, but also our company many opportunities!

As a personal statement I’d like to add the following:
It was so much fun spending these days in Bremen with existing and new friends and to experience ten days of space in full speed!
I learned a lot, had more drinks than usual (oops), was busy as heck whilst trying to see as many sessions as possible and to take in as much as possible but I still missed so many things that happened…
I, and potentially our company as well, will make sure to be back for many more SGCs and IACs! These events and the people involved perfectly show why space is THE industry to be involved in!
Thank you to all the great people that made these days so successful and enjoyable (especially my Working Group 4 folks! ?)

We safely arrived in Vietnam and are testing our equipment at the NAVIS centre this week.

Our aim is to collect GNSS-data samples to test our technology products with. Especially the signals which can’t be received in Europe are interesting for us – that would be the Japanese QZSS and the Indian NavIC/IRNSS.

Today, we were able to record the first data set. We could use the roof of one uni-building to do the recordings and were offered with great visibility and lovely views all around. The focus for today’s recording was NavIC/IRNSS (mainly the S-Band and L5, but also the whole L-Band). From what we could evaluate already things are looking promising!

Here it is: our travelogue about the 10-day trip to south-east Asia our COO did in May.

This trip was made possible thanks to the EU-funded BELS project. Our company had applied for their first call, through which funded companies were taken to different countries and events to connect with local stakeholders and initiate business collaborations.
Funded companies will get their travel expense reimbursed and are treated like VIPs by the BELS team and the helpful and dedicated local partners!

Our COO’s trip was split into two parts. The first week was spent in Vietnam, the second in Malaysia and Thailand.

In Vietnam, he visited the NAVIS test centre, which is located at the Hanoi University of Science and Technology (HUST). It was founded and funded through an FP7-project with two main tasks in mind: connecting Asian and European companies, and serving as a test centre for European GNSS technology in Asia.

Besides the NAVIS, our COO also visited different potential stakeholders to present TeleOrbit’s products and talk about possible collaborations.
The meetings all went well and future will tell, how successful the trip was.

Before departing to Malaysia and Thailand, there was just enough time for some sightseeing in Hanoi.

On Monday, 22 May, the first workshop in Kuala Lumpur started. There were presentations by local researchers presenting Malaysian research projects as well as product presentations by European companies like ours and fundamental GNSS-related presentations by European Researchers.
Throughout the day, there was enough time for one-on-one meetings with local participants and we found interesting first beginnings for future business.

And finally, on Wednesday, 24 May, there was a second workshop in Bangkok. It was organized similarly to the one in Malaysia and this time it was accompanied by a networking-event after the workshop with invited local companies and the European partners. This more private setting allowed for longer and more detailed discussions about potential business opportunities and was an ideal way of connecting with potential partners and customers.

All in all, the trip was very interesting and positive throughout. Our COO had many opportunities to talk with interesting people and to connect with like-minded people.

We would like to thank the whole BELS team and all local partners for their help and support! Without them, the trip wouldn’t have been this successful!
